zkSync

ZK

A ZK-rollup layer-2 on Ethereum offering low-cost transactions while inheriting Ethereum security.

What is zkSync?

zkSync is a ZK-rollup layer-2 on Ethereum developed by Matter Labs, founded by Alex Gluchowski. The project launched zkSync Lite in 2020 for simple transfers and zkSync Era in March 2023 as a full EVM-compatible ZK-rollup.

zkSync Era uses zero-knowledge proofs to batch transactions and post validity proofs to Ethereum, achieving lower costs while inheriting Ethereum's security. The platform supports Solidity and Vyper smart contracts, making it easy for Ethereum developers to deploy existing applications.

The ZK token was distributed through an airdrop in June 2024. zkSync has attracted significant DeFi activity and developer interest, competing with StarkNet and other ZK-rollups for the leading position in the ZK-L2 space.

How Does zkSync Work?

zkSync Era uses zero-knowledge proofs (specifically zk-SNARKs) to batch transactions executed off-chain and submit validity proofs to Ethereum. Unlike optimistic rollups, there is no challenge period as the proofs mathematically guarantee correctness. This provides faster finality for bridging assets back to Ethereum.

zkSync Era achieves EVM compatibility through its custom compiler that converts Solidity and Vyper code to run efficiently in its ZK-friendly execution environment. Account abstraction is built natively into the protocol, enabling features like social recovery, session keys, and paying gas fees in any token.

Use Cases

  • Low-cost DeFi trading on Ethereum L2
  • Account abstraction and gasless transactions
  • ZK-powered scaling for dApps
  • Cross-chain bridging with fast finality
  • Enterprise blockchain applications

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes zkSync different?

zkSync's key differentiators include native account abstraction (enabling features like social recovery and gas payment in any token), EVM compatibility through its custom compiler, and the use of zk-SNARKs for validity proofs. The Hyperchain feature allows developers to deploy their own ZK-powered chains.

Is zkSync safe?

zkSync uses zero-knowledge proofs that mathematically guarantee transaction validity, providing stronger security than optimistic rollups. However, the system is still relatively new, and the prover and sequencer are currently centralized. Funds can always be withdrawn to Ethereum through escape hatch mechanisms.

How much cheaper is zkSync than Ethereum?

Transaction fees on zkSync are typically 90-95% cheaper than Ethereum mainnet. After EIP-4844, fees dropped to a few cents for simple transfers and token swaps. The ZK proof verification cost is amortized across many transactions.
